Los Angeles B-Permit Services
B-Permit DBOS
There are many building permits in Los Angeles that are required when doing construction or repairs on your property. You may have heard of A-Permits and B-Permits. What’s the difference? An A-Permit covers MINOR construction in a public right of way, while a B-Permit is required for major construction improvement projects created through property or right of way owned or under the control of the city. Some examples may include:
- Sidewalk repair/replacement
- Storm drains
- Sewers
- Driveway ramps
- Structural improvements that will involve new grades, elevations, depths and structures that will be created through the public right of way
Why should I use an expeditor for my Class B Permit?
The permitting process can be daunting. There are many forms and plans to fill out and file with the city.
Plans for B-Permit projects are usually prepared by private consulting engineers hired by the property owner pulling the permit. These permit expeditors have the knowledge and experience with the process to ensure that the plans are correct and filed with the correct offices so that your project isn’t tied up in the Bureau of Engineering (BOE).
The person applying for the B-Permit must be the owner of the property. If the property is owned by a corporation, the application must be signed by an officer and the corporation and the corporation’s seal must be on the application.
The contractor handling the work will sign the application and the bond. An expeditor can complete and file the forms and coordinate with the contractor regarding the scope of work.
How long does it take to pull a B-Permit in Los Angeles?
How long do you have to wait for the B-Permit? That all depends on many variables – the scope of the project, the BOE’s backlog, the complexity of the project, etc. It could take just three weeks, or – in some extreme cases – a year.
This is why it pays to hire an expeditor to complete your B-Permit application. The average property owner doesn’t have the time or the extensive experience with the permitting process that an expeditor has.
