LA Traffic Control Permits Los Angeles

Doing construction in the public right or way or on streets in Los Angeles? Make sure you get your traffic control approval.

What kind of permits do I need for traffic control in Los Angeles?

In general, most people need to get traffic control approval when doing construction on sidewalks, curbs, pavement, sewers, storm drains, gutters or retaining walls.

Before you can get a traffic permit from the Los Angeles Department of Transportation, you must first submit and have approved construction permits from the Bureau of Engineering.

Which permit might you need? That depends on the project. An A-Permit is issued for the repair, construction or reconstruction of curbs, sidewalks, driveway ramps or gutters. A B-Permit is issued for extensive public works projects – for example, street widening, changing street grade. These types of construction plans usually must be signed by a California licensed Civil and/or Electrical and/or Traffic Engineer.

Traffic Control Guidelines

When applying for a traffic control permit, you have to make sure your project adheres to certain guidelines.

  • Pedestrian Access – Pedestrians must still have access or detour provided and approved by an engineer
  • Emergency vehicles must have access at all times
  • Busses must have access through construction areas at all times
  • Businesses on a corner must have access to at least one driveway
  • ADA accessible pedestrian paths must be available.

In addition, the public and affected businesses must be notified of any street closures ahead of time. Temporary No Parking signs must be posted 48 hours in advance. If the work will restrict access to a business, that business must be notified 24 hours in advance.
